Brutalist Beauties: Architectural Remnants of the USSR

Frédéric Chaubin’s Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed captures 90 extraordinary buildings from 14 former Soviet Republics, showcasing the chaotic and innovative architecture of the USSR’s final decades (1970–1990). Dubbed the “fourth age” of Soviet architecture, these structures defied modernist norms, embracing diverse styles and bold experimentation amid a crumbling system.

Highlights include a Suprematist-inspired youth camp, a crematorium with concrete flames, and a political center evoking Big Brother. This eclectic collection reflects the USSR’s vast geography, its ideological dreams, and the architectural creativity born from a collapsing regime. Winner of the International Artbook and Film Festival’s Architectural Book of the Year, this work immortalizes a unique architectural legacy.
